| The intensive use of pesticides and fertilizers in the agricultural sector remains a threat to the sustainability of farmland and even life expectancy of farmers. This paper assessed the impacts of organic cotton adoption on the welfare of farmers in Benin. We used the double hurdle model and the control function approach using a sample of 1416 cotton producers from the “Sustainability of Cotton Production in Africa" (SCOPA) Project in Benin. Results have shown that the adoption and intensity of the adoption depend on the producer's land ownership, fertilizer use, access to credit, membership in professional organizations, and participation to training. However, we found that organic cotton adoption and acreage significantly and surprisingly harm adopters' welfare through a decrease in income and thereby an increase in poverty incidence. These findings suggest the design of targeted insensitive policies to technically and financially better support farmers to make effective the expected benefits of organic cotton. |
