''A synthetic control approach on Argentina's beef exports suspension''
( 2026, Vol. 0 No.0 )

Argentina, a major global beef producer, suspended beef exports in May 2021 to contain rising domestic prices amid high inflation. This paper estimates the short-term impact of the export ban on retail beef prices. Using the synthetic control method, we construct a counterfactual price for a mid-sized Argentine city and compare it to observed market outcomes. The ban temporarily slowed the growth of beef prices between July and October 2021, after which prices resumed their upward trend as restrictions were relaxed. Overall, the findings suggest that export restrictions can stabilize domestic prices temporarily but have limited lasting effects.
