Journal of Public Economic Theory

Guidelines for Referees

Editorial Standards

The Journal of Public Economic Theory
(JPET) is devoted to the publication of theoretical work in all areas of public economics. We explicitly reject the propositions that good theory necessarily depends on the use of complicated mathematical tools and that the use of complicated mathematical tools necessarily means that the theory is too abstract to have any economic importance. The Journal is interested in publishing high quality papers that are creative and rigorous regardless of their technical level. Accepted paper should be correct, original, clearly exposed, give appropriate credit to the previous work, and make clear what the contribution of the paper is to the literature.

We ask that reports be returned within eight weeks. If this proves impossible for you, please email the editor who requested the report directly with an alternative deadline. If it turns out that you will not be able to review this manuscript, please send back a short note to let us know this so that we can seek another reviewer. We sincerely appreciate your help.

Mechanics

Once you have read the paper and written your report, please make it into a PDF. You may also write a cover letter to the editor in charge of the manuscript with your candid comments and advice if you wish. This will not be forwarded to the authors. Please make your cover letter into a PDF as well.

When you are ready to proceed, go to the Journal's front page (www.JPET.net) and click on the &rdquo Submit Referee Report&rdquo link. You will be asked to supply the paper number, your user name (email address) and password. If you have forgotten your password, you can request it at the login screen. It is important that you use the same email address the associate editor used to contact you. Otherwise, the system will not recognize you. When you have logged in, you will be given a screen where you can upload the PDF of your report along with an optional cover letter. These will be forwarded to the associate editor in charge immediately and you should receive both a confirmation screen and an acknowledgment via email that your report was received.
